Let me state my position clearly
Here’s an opinion that has made me unpopular more than once: the size of an order should not determine how much quality information comes with it. I work at Hanwha, reviewing certificates of analysis, lot codes, and package labels for polymer products—among them Hanwha Total EVA, polypropylene, polyethylene, and silicone—before those materials ship to customers. In 2024 alone I reviewed documentation for roughly 500 lots and sent about 15 back for corrections before they could leave the plant.
Those corrections were often small. A lot code printed wrong on a bag. A test date missing from a certificate. But if a documentation error reaches the customer, they can’t verify what they received. And when that customer just placed their first small trial order, they usually don’t have a team of engineers to fall back on.
A 30-ton EVA order taught me more than any big contract
In Q3 2024, a customer making EVA foam shoes placed a trial order for 30 tons of Hanwha Total EVA resin. In polymer terms, 30 tons is small. It was the customer’s first order with us, and the goal was simple: run the resin on their midsole line and see if the finished foam met their specifications. That’s the definition of a trial order.
The customer asked for something that should be routine: lot-specific melt flow index data, not “typical values” from the technical datasheet. They wanted to know what was in the actual material we were about to ship.
I’m not going to pretend that request flowed through our system instantly. Our certificates of analysis are lot-specific, but pulling the full test record meant checking with the lab and matching the results to the lot code on the customer’s order. It took about a day and a half. The customer didn’t complain about the wait. They just said they appreciated that the numbers were real, and that they had verified the material before running it. Then their trial run worked out.
(Should mention: that request changed our workflow. We added a field for detailed lot data requests in the order system. Now it takes hours, not days. The next customer who benefited was also a small trial order. That’s the thing about quality: it compounds.)
The PP logo is not a logo
Take polypropylene. When bags leave our plant, they carry resin identification markings. Most people call it the PP logo: the number 5 inside a triangle with “PP” beneath it. I’ve heard salespeople describe it as a logo, but it’s more accurate to call it infrastructure. The marking follows a standardized practice, ASTM D7611, so sorters and recyclers can identify the resin family without a lab test. If the code is misprinted or doesn’t match the lot record, the bag can contaminate an entire recycling stream—or simply be unverifiable to the customer.
This is also why I push back when people treat label accuracy as a printing issue. Under the FTC Green Guides, 16 CFR Part 260, environmental marketing claims like “recyclable” have to be substantiated, and the conditions matter. A resin code is arguably not an environmental claim—it’s a sorting instruction. But it feeds the recycling claim. If the code is wrong, the claim falls apart.
For a small customer buying PP for the first time, checking the PP logo and the lot code on the certificate is one of the fastest verification steps available. It takes thirty seconds and it tells you more than a sales conversation will.
Why I’ve come to appreciate small customers
Here’s the part that still surprises me: small customers ask better questions. Someone comparing foam board insulation vs fiberglass for a building project doesn’t accept “they’re both good.” They want R-value per inch, moisture behavior, fire ratings, and code compliance. They compare products by measurable properties.
Polymer buying should work the same way. The small customer ordering EVA for shoe midsoles wants to know why vinyl acetate content matters, or how melt flow rate affects foam compression set. They don’t have assumptions built in yet, so they ask the questions the rest of us have stopped asking. Those questions expose gaps in datasheets, labels, and processes. I’ve improved our documentation because of questions from customers ordering 30 tons, not only from customers ordering 3,000.
Addressing the economics objection
I’m not naive about cost-to-serve. A 30-ton order cannot be priced the same as a 3,000-ton contract, and I’m not arguing that it should be. Order minimums exist for real production reasons. No supplier can give every trial buyer a dedicated engineer.
But there is a difference between pricing and withholding information. A customer doesn’t need an engineer to access a certificate of analysis. They need a process that treats document access as standard, not as a favor.
This is part of why the customer portal exists. New customers sometimes assume that the Hanwha login on our website is just for big established accounts. It isn’t. Once you have an account, it gives the same access to order documents, certificates, and lot records regardless of purchase history. Log in, find the order, compare the lot code on the certificate with the code printed on the bags.
I don’t have hard data on how many trial orders fail due to documentation problems rather than material quality. But based on the quality escalations that reach my desk, I’d estimate that traceability and paperwork issues account for something like 10 to 15 percent of disputes. That’s a lot of avoidable friction. Most of it disappears when the documents are treated as part of the product.
Here’s my bottom line
I’m not going to soften this: if a supplier treats your trial order as an inconvenience, that tells you more about their quality culture than any glossy audit report they hand you.
A trial order isn’t a favor. It’s the first step of a relationship and the best chance either side has to catch problems while the risk is still small. The customer making EVA foam shoes with a 30-ton order today might be ordering five times that next year—or they might tell twenty other small manufacturers that your documents are useless. The outcome depends on whether you gave them real data and treated their questions seriously.
Hanwha Total EVA, PP, polyethylene—it doesn’t matter which resin. Quality information is not a privilege of scale. It’s the product.
Those are my observations from the quality side of the polymer industry as of early 2025. Markets shift, processes evolve, but this principle doesn’t.
