I work in quality and brand compliance at Hanwha's chemical materials business. I'm not in sales. My job is to review product documentation and physical lot approvals before material ships—roughly 300 unique lots a year. 1. What are Hanwha products, exactly?

I always ask for the grade code, not just the trade name. A grade code tells me which process capability and testing regime applies. The trade name tells me almost nothing.

I once reviewed two lots of the same polycarbonate grade where the melt flow values were both within spec, but thin-wall test bars broke at noticeably different impact. That kind of inconsistency can sink a production line. So ask for lot-specific certificates, not just a generic datasheet. If polycarbonate is going into parts that need impact or optical performance, process stability matters as much as chemistry.

4. Is EVA foam flooring toxic?

This question shows up in our inbox a ton. Direct answer: EVA resin itself is not the problem. EVA, short for ethylene-vinyl acetate, is not PVC and normally does not need phthalate plasticizers or heavy metal stabilizers. But EVA foam flooring is a finished product. It is made from resin plus foaming agents, crosslinking agents, pigments, and sometimes recycled content. Those are the things that can create odors, emissions, or restricted substances in a bad formulation.

If someone asks 'is EVA foam toxic,' I answer with a question: which product? From which factory? Tested with what method? I don't want to overstate my authority here—I'm not a toxicologist. I'm the person who checks specs and test reports, and the reports tell me the safety risk is usually in the formulation, not in the resin name. A base resin can be stable, and a colorful foam mat can still fail a lead or phthalate test because of a pigment or additive downstream. So no, EVA is not inherently toxic. But 'made from EVA' is not a safety certificate.

5. Why would a brand advertise non-toxic EVA foam flooring if it still needs testing?

Because 'non-toxic' is a short phrase, and marketing loves short phrases. The problem is that the phrase has no binding definition unless the supplier names the standard behind it. I don't assume a manufacturer is lying. I also don't assume they are telling me enough.

A defensible claim should point to evidence. For flooring in a child's room, ask for third-party testing to the relevant product safety standard, like EN 71-3 or CPSIA lead and phthalates. If a supplier says 'made with Hanwha products,' that tells me the raw resin came from a large polymer producer. It does not tell me what happened during blending, foaming, cutting, or packaging. The final product maker controls those variables, so the final product maker should provide the test report.

6. I have a deadline. Should I pay more for faster delivery?

This is not really about the portal or polymer chemistry, but it is one of the most common procurement questions I get. In an urgent situation, you are not paying extra for speed alone. You are paying for a confirmed commitment from someone with capacity and a controlled process. I used to see expediting as an annoying budget line. Then I missed a trial run because a 'probably Friday' shipment arrived the following Tuesday.

Now my rule is: calculate the cost of standing still. If a late material keeps five people waiting for two hours, the rush fee is often cheaper than idle time. Ask the supplier to commit to a date in writing.
