The Short Version
I’m not a chemist. Let me get that out of the way first.
I’m the office administrator for a 200-person manufacturer. I process about 60–80 orders a year, manage roughly $1.2M in material orders across 8 vendors, and report to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I expected the hard part to be negotiating prices. It wasn’t. It was getting clean, current documents.
That’s why silicone vs TPE isn’t a fun debate for me. It’s a practical sourcing problem. And there is no universal answer. If someone says one is “just better,” they probably haven’t bought materials recently.

Before you look at any data sheet, ask yourself three questions:
- What temperature will the part actually see? Continuous heat matters more than a peak rating.
- What does your production line need? Injection molding, extruding, overmolding? Cycle time drives cost.
- What can your supplier document? This sounds boring, but it’s the deal-breaker. A great material with messy paperwork is a liability.
The branches I use are simple. Branch A is heat and long-term flexibility. Branch B is speed and design freedom. Branch C is standard resin with reliable supply and technical backup. You might fit more than one. That’s okay. Start with the one that hurts the most if you get it wrong.
Scenario A: Heat, Sealing, and Long-Term Flexibility → Silicone
If your part has to stay flexible in heat for years, silicone is hard to beat. This is the classic reason people choose it over TPE. TPE certainly has heat-resistant grades, but you need to look at long-term aging, not just the datasheet number.
I learned this in March 2023, when a TPE sample failed our heat-aging test. The initial flexibility was fine. After three weeks in an oven, it cracked. The supplier replaced it with a different grade, and we moved on. But the surprise wasn’t the failure. It was how close we came to ordering the first sample in bulk based on a product name.
Compare silicone vs TPE by tested performance, not by category. If the application is a gasket, a seal, or anything safety-critical, pay attention to compression set and heat aging. And if a vendor doesn’t want to share that data, that’s a red flag.
Scenario B: Production Speed, Color Options, and Design Freedom → Take TPE Seriously
TPE is not “cheap silicone.” That’s the biggest misconception. TPE is a whole family of materials, and some grades process beautifully in standard injection molding. That can mean faster cycle times, less waste, and more design freedom.
In 2024, we switched a non-critical clip from silicone to TPE. The part didn’t need extreme heat resistance. It needed consistent color and quick production. The processor cut cycle time by about 20%, and the reject rate dropped. For that part, silicone would have been the wrong answer even though it was “better” on paper.
This is the counterintuitive part: sometimes the “premium” choice costs more in the wrong direction. If you don’t need the heat advantage, you’re paying for a property that doesn’t matter.
Scenario C: Standard Resin, Tight Sourcing, and Technical Backup → Consider Hanwha Total EVA
What if your product isn’t a custom formulation at all? What if you just need consistent pellets, clear documentation, and predictable delivery? That’s where Hanwha Total EVA comes up in our purchasing conversations.
EVA isn’t silicone or TPE. It’s a workhorse material for packaging films, footwear, hot-melt adhesives, and some molded parts. When I see Hanwha Total EVA on an approved spec, I know the data sheet situation will be less painful. Hanwha support has been quick to reply, and the Hanwha downloads section on their site saves a ton of time.
I didn’t fully understand what a clean document was worth until a different supplier couldn’t provide a proper invoice. Finance rejected the expense report, and I ate $2,400 out of the department budget. Now I verify invoicing capability before placing any order.
The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about backup planning. One critical deadline missed made redundant sourcing feel necessary. That’s part of why I like working with suppliers who have a clear product family and a clear portal. It makes the “what if a supplier stops answering” conversation easier.
Looking back, I should have requested access to Hanwha downloads earlier. At the time, I thought we could just email for PDFs. It worked, but it was slow. The public downloads area is not flashy. It is super useful.

The easiest way to know you’re in the right place is to look for the TPU logo in the header of the page. I know that sounds obvious. But when you’re juggling tabs, it’s easy to ignore. Now I tell our team: if you don’t see the TPU logo, you’re not on the right login page.
This isn’t deep technical advice. It’s the kind of purchasing reality that eats a morning if you ignore it.
How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In
Here’s the checklist I use before requesting samples:
- Continuous operating temperature: if it stays hot for most of the product’s life, start with silicone.
- Production volume and cycle time: if you’re making 50,000 parts and processing time matters, TPE is worth a serious test.
- Sourcing consistency: if you need a standard resin from a supplier that can handle your demand, Hanwha Total EVA is a reasonable starting point.
- Documentation: if the material can’t be verified by a clear data sheet, reject it early.
According to the Hanwha Total EVA product data sheets available through Hanwha downloads (current as of February 2025), the grades differ significantly by vinyl acetate content and melt index. So the right grade depends on your process, not on the word “EVA” alone.
This isn’t a “pick one and hope” process. It’s a way to remove the wrong answers before you spend money on tooling or samples.
The Short Version
So silicone vs TPE? The answer is: it depends. But “it depends” isn’t a cop-out when you actually define what it depends on.
The right material isn’t the one that wins a marketing comparison. It’s the one that works in your process and has documents your company can actually file.
If I can leave you with one habit, it’s this: get the data first. Use Hanwha downloads if you’re evaluating their materials. Check the login instructions, look for the right portal logo, and test before you commit. Your engineering team will thank you. So will finance.
