There's no single 'best' plastic — only the right one for your situation

Honestly, I learned this the hard way. When I started sourcing plastic parts for small production runs, I assumed polypropylene was always the safe choice. Then I tried to paint a batch of PVC pipes for a client display. The paint peeled off within a week. That mistake cost me about $450 and a 2-week delay. So yeah, I've been through the trial-and-error cycle.

This guide breaks down three common scenarios. Depending on what you need — heat resistance, flexibility, or a paintable surface — the answer changes. Let's sort through it.

Before we dive: my experience sample

I've worked mostly with small- and medium-sized orders (100–5,000 pieces) using Hanwha materials through their distributor network. If you're dealing with massive industrial contracts, your pricing and options might look different. This is based on what I've personally ordered and tested.

Scenario A: You need chemical resistance and high-temperature performance

If your parts will sit near a hot motor, handle aggressive solvents, or see continuous use above 80°C, polypropylene (PP) is your go-to. I've used Hanwha's PP grades for pump housings and battery cases — they hold up well where polyethylene just softens.

What to watch for: PP can be brittle at low temperatures. Also, it's nearly impossible to paint without special surface treatment. So don't try to paint PP parts unless you're prepared for extra prep steps.

Scenario B: You need food contact or low-temperature toughness

For food containers, cutting boards, or tubing that needs to stay flexible in cold environments, polyethylene (PE) is usually the better choice. Hanwha's polyethylene products are commonly used in milk jugs and freezer-safe containers. It's also cheaper than PP in most cases.

The catch: PE has lower heat resistance (melting point around 110°C vs. 160°C for PP). I once ordered PE parts for a hot-fill application — that was a $890 mistake when the parts warped. Lesson learned.

Scenario C: You want to paint or decorate plastic — especially PVC pipe

This is where PVC comes in. PVC takes paint much better than PP or PE, but only if you do it right. I've painted a lot of PVC pipes for shelving, display stands, and — once — a prototype of a retail fixture. Here's what works:

  1. Clean thoroughly. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any mold release or grime. Don't skip this.
  2. Lightly sand the surface. I use 220-grit sandpaper to give the paint something to grip. It takes maybe 2 minutes per pipe.
  3. Apply a plastic primer. Don't rely on the paint alone. A bonding primer designed for plastics makes a huge difference.
  4. Paint with a spray can or brush. Multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat.
  5. Let it cure for 48 hours. I learned this the hard way — rushed painting on a Friday, handled the pipe on Monday, and the paint came off in chunks.

The same general approach works for ABS and polycarbonate, but PVC is the most forgiving for DIY paint jobs.

How to figure out which scenario fits you

Ask yourself three questions:

  • Will the plastic be exposed to heat above 70°C? If yes, go with PP.
  • Does it need to be food-safe or flexible in cold? Choose PE.
  • Do you absolutely have to paint it and get a lasting finish? Go with PVC — but prep it right.

If you're still unsure, order small batches of each material and test them. Most suppliers (including Hanwha's distribution partners) offer sample quantities. Don't commit to a full production run until you're confident.
