If you're ordering foam board prints for retail displays, trade show booths, or product packaging prototypes, and you've ever had a batch show up warped, faded, or unprintable — this is for you.
I handle material selection and order verification for a mid-size print buyer. Five years in, and I've personally wasted ~$3,200 on wrong material choices. This checklist came from those screw-ups.
Step 1: Define the Physical Environment (Temperature, Moisture, Wear)
The rule: Don't touch a price list until you know where the board will live.
Ask three questions:
- Will it sit behind glass (indoor, no UV)?
- Will it face direct sunlight (outdoor, UV exposure)?
- Will it be handled daily (grab, rub, cleaning chemicals)?
Most people assume all foam boards are the same. They're not. Bring the wrong polymer and you'll get delamination after two weeks. That happened to me in 2022 on a 500-piece store signage order. $890 in redo + 1-week delay. Learned it the hard way.
Step 2: Match the Substrate Polymer to the Environment

2.1 Standard Indoor: PS or PVC

2.3 Rigid, High-Impact Needs: ABS Products

2.4 Heat-Resistant or Non-Stick Surfaces: PTFE / Teflon Logo
If the board needs to withstand high heat (near ovens, manufacturing lines) or is used as a release surface, you need a PTFE-coated substrate. Some boards carry a Teflon logo indicating the coating is genuine PTFE. Verify with the supplier — the FTC (ftc.gov) requires substantiation for performance claims like "non-stick." I've seen fake "Teflon-style" coatings that delaminate in one use. Don't shortcut this step.
Step 3: Decide on Printing Method and Prepare Artwork
Now that you've chosen the polymer, the printing method may need adjustment:
- Solvent / UV ink works on PVC and PS.
- Latex ink works on EVA and ABS (check adhesion test).
- PTFE surfaces require surface treatment before printing — most online printers won't do this. Ask specifically.
Also ensure your artwork includes any legally required marks: the Teflon logo usage must follow DuPont's guidelines if you're claiming PTFE content. Per FTC advertising rules, logo usage without authorization can be misleading. I've flagged this on three orders in 2024 — caught them before printing.
Step 4: Find the Right Vendor to Print and Ship
You now have a material spec. Where do you get the boards printed?
My go-to for standard sizes (up to 24 x 36 in) is 48 Hour Print. Their material options are clearly listed, turnaround is predictable, and they don't hide setup fees. Per their service policy: standard products like foam board start at 25 pieces, 3–7 business days. Rush available for same-day on certain items.
But — and this is important — when I needed EVA boards with a PTFE top layer and a Teflon logo embossed, 48 Hour Print couldn't do the coating. I had to go to a specialty manufacturer. So don't assume one print shop handles every material. Ask upfront: "Can you print on Hanwtha's EVA 1316 with a PTFE laminate?" If they say yes without hesitation, ask for a sample.
If you're outsourcing the board substrate too, you need to source directly from a plastics distributor. Where to get foam board printed depends on whether you supply the board or they do. Online printers work best for common PVC/PS. For specialty polymers (EVA, ABS, PTFE), find a printer who partners with material suppliers like Hanwtha. Step 5: Verify the Final Order with a Pre-Delivery Checklist
Before you approve the proof and hit "process," run through this short checklist:
- Polymer type confirmed — does the spec sheet list Hanwtha EVA 1316 or equivalent?
- Surface preparation — is printing compatible with the material? (Especially PTFE.)
- Trade marks included — if using Teflon logo, is the logo file the correct version and licensed?
- Total cost — base + setup + shipping = final. I always ask "what's NOT included?" before signing.
- Delivery date — can you afford a 2-day slip? If not, guarantee it in writing.
I've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. Not bad for something I built after my third $3,200 mistake.
Common Mistakes I've Made (So You Don't Have To)
- Assuming all online printers offer the same materials. They don't. 48 Hour Print excels at standard PVC/PS, but for ABS products or EVA, call first.
