Look, I'm not going to write a corporate brochure. I've spent the past six years managing purchasing for a mid-size plastics fabricator, and I've audited more orders than I can count. This is the FAQ I wish I'd had when I started buying Hanwha materials—the real questions buyers ask when they search for "Hanwha," "EVA foam roll," or "coroplast vs foam board."
What is Hanwha, and why should a procurement person care?
Hanwha is a South Korean conglomerate with a big chemical division. Depending on who you ask, they're one of the largest producers of EVA resin, polyethylene, and specialty polymers. For me, the appeal isn't the brand name—it's the fact that I can spec materials from one portfolio and not juggle ten different suppliers.
But here's the thing: buying from a big name doesn't mean you skip your homework. You still need to verify product grades, get current certifications, and test the material in your own process. Brand is a starting point, not a substitute for due diligence.
Why does the Hanwha logo keep appearing when I check suppliers?
Because the logo is a trust signal. And trust signals get abused. When I audited our 2023 spending, I found a vendor using the Hanwha logo on their quote template who wasn't an authorized distributor. Not a giant scam, but enough to make me wonder what else they were doing.
What I do now: ask for a distributor certificate, cross-check lot codes, and pull the official Hanwha logo from their website before comparing. How do I choose the right Hanwha polyethylene product?
Polyethylene isn't one thing. There are HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, and each behaves differently in the mold and in the field. The two specs I look at first are density and melt flow index. Higher density gives more rigidity; higher melt flow gives easier processing. You need both to be right for your part geometry and your equipment.
We mostly run Hanwha HDPE for rigid packaging and some LLDPE for film. But that's our context. If you're injection-molding thin walls or blown film, your requirements will be different. Ask for the technical data sheet and, if possible, a trial batch. "Worked for us" is not a substitute for your own trials.
What should I know before ordering an EVA foam roll?
EVA foam does not all feel the same. Density and hardness are the numbers that actually matter, and I'd argue hardness (Shore A) is the one most buyers overlook. A 38° roll might feel great for padding, but if you need structural compression resistance, you'll want something in the 45°–50° range. And yes, higher density costs more—because you're getting more actual polymer per roll.
Another thing: buy by thickness and volume, not just by roll weight. I still kick myself for ordering a 50mm EVA roll because the price per square meter looked unbeatable. The roll was so thick we couldn't feed it through our splitter. We paid a converter to slice it, and that ate the savings. Lesson learned, unfortunately.
Coroplast vs foam board: which one should I spec?
These materials come up together in signage, but they're not interchangeable.
Coroplast is corrugated polypropylene. It's light, waterproof, and survives outdoors. Foam board is usually a PVC foam core sandwich, and it prints better, but it's softer and will warp if it gets wet. Short version: indoor or hands-on displays go foam board. Outdoor or long-term signs go coroplast.
For reference, a 24×18 coroplast sheet typically runs $5–12 at online sign shops, and foam board in the same size is about $4–10. A 4×8 coroplast board is often under $25, while the same size foam board can be $20–45. These are publicly listed rates from major online printers as of early 2025; verify current pricing before you budget.
What's the Hanwha app, and do I actually need it?
If you search "Hanwha app," you'll get a mix of results. For procurement purposes, the relevant one is the customer portal (sometimes delivered as a mobile app) where Hanwha shares product documents—SDS, material certifications, processing guides, that kind of thing. (I keep it on my tablet for quick lookups on the production floor.)
Do I need it? I'd say yes, but with a caveat: the app only helps if your distributor or account rep gives you access to the documents behind it. If you can't get current documentation before the order ships, that's a red flag. I'm not sure how consistent the app availability is across regions, so treat it as a convenience, not the only way.
What tests should I run before accepting a polyethylene shipment?
At a minimum, verify the certificate of analysis against your required grade. Don't just check the resin name—check the lot number, the date, and the actual reported values for density and melt flow. In Q2 2024, we caught a shipment where the COA matched the grade but the lot number was from a completely different run. Not a huge disaster, but it forced us to quarantine the material and re-test everything.
If you're doing this for the first time, budget for a third-party lab test on one sample. It costs a few hundred dollars, but it's a lot cheaper than a production shutdown. (Surprise, surprise: the cheap option is rarely the one you want in your molds.)
What's the hidden cost that catches first-time buyers off guard?
It's not the unit price. It's the gap between sample and production. That free sample can feel great, but a full roll of EVA or a pallet of polyethylene behaves differently in your production line. I have mixed feelings about free samples: they're useful, but they're not a guarantee.
Now I budget for a trial run and a QC hold-back on the first order. If the material fails in production, I want a reserve batch to keep the line running while I sort out the problem with the supplier. Not the most heroic procurement strategy, but it's saved us more than once. (Thankfully.)
